Romero bicycle kick rescues point for Spurs against Newcastle

Cristian Romero awkwardly volleyed an overhead kick beyond Newcastle stopper Aaron Ramsdale right at the end to grab a 2-2 stalemate for Thomas Franks struggling Tottenham side on Tuesday evening.

Eddie Howes squad will rue their errors after surrendering their advantage twice at home yet Frank can take comfort following three consecutive losses across various tournaments.

Tottenham skipper Romero levelled matters against Newcastle replacement Bruno Guimaraes second period goal in the 78th minute via an excellent diving header.

Anthony Gordon, yet another Magpies substitute, seemed to clinch victory by restoring the hosts lead from twelve yards just eight minutes on.

However Romero netted once more late in added time as his mishit effort wriggled past defenders and past Ramsdale, baffling the Newcastle outfit.

The Geordies controlled the ball for most of the opening period but created scant real chances from it.

They nearly broke the deadlock around the 35th minute with Joelinton surging on the flank and firing wide of Guglielmo Vicario only for it to rebound off the upright.

Shortly after Tottenham nearly struck first thanks to flair from Lucas Bergvall.

Mohammed Kudus slid a pass goalmouth to the playmaker whose ingenious backflick narrowly cleared Ramsdales crossbar.

This sparked a livelier phase for the travellers though both sides remained tied at the interval.

Tottenham endured two alarms soon after the restart. Vicario first denied Harvey Barnes then as the rebound reached Nick Woltemade Kevin Danso blocked the forwards nod on the line.

As three quarters of the match elapsed Howe introduced Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga in place of Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy.

Minutes following his entry the England man dashed along the touchline and whipped in a cross.

It rebounded loose to Guimaraes who rifled a tidy finish into the distant angle during the 71st minute.

Yet Tottenham equalised promptly. Kudus supplied from the right where Romero connected with a stooping header.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Dan Burn clashed inside the area suggesting play onward.

Referee Thomas Bramall consulted the sideline screen post VAR check and pointed to the spot.

Gordon slotted it with force but the excitement persisted.

In the 95th minute Romero leaped high onto a Tottenham set piece corner. Though not sweetly struck it rolled home securing a vital share for the away team.
