Rangers skipper James Tavernier set to depart after 11 years with club

Over the last eight years Tavernier has led Rangers as captain securing the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 the Scottish Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in 2023.

He captained the side in the 2022 Europa League final versus Eintracht Frankfurt enduring the setback of a loss in the penalty shootout.

This season Rangers sit one point behind top side Hearts hoping to close the gap on the Edinburgh team to earn Tavernier one more Premiership medal before his exit.

The 34 year old whose deal runs out at the seasons close shared on Instagram that the choice to leave was far from simple.

This club has been a huge part of my life and my familys over the past 11 years he stated.

It has offered me so much both on the field and beyond and since joining I have strived to pour all my effort into upholding it properly.

To have earned the privilege of captaining this club from 2018 onward is a source of immense pride for me always. Guiding the squad onto the pitch donning the armband and earning that responsibility means more than words can convey.

The English defender playing at right back stands as the leading goalscorer among British defenders with 144 strikes in 562 outings for Rangers and 152 across his career.

He transferred from Newcastle in 2015 during Rangers time in the Scottish Championship after the club had dropped to the fourth level following administration issues.

Tavernier aided Rangers in clinching that league and in 2018 when Steven Gerrard took over as manager he appointed him as full time captain.
