Points shared in gritty defensive Klassieker between Feyenoord and Ajax, PSV title still pending

Heading into the weekend, Feyenoord occupied second position, leading rivals Ajax by five points. Ajax kicked off their time with interim coach Óscar García via a convincing 4-0 victory against Sparta Rotterdam the week before.

Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie needed to adjust with two switches as Mats Deijl sat out due to suspension and Hwang In-beom missed out through injury. Jordan Lotomba and Tsuyoshi Watanabe filled those roles, while Anel Ahmedhodzic stepped into Thijs Kraaijeveld's place at the back. García brought Wout Weghorst into the initial lineup, with Jorthy Mokio covering for the sidelined Youri Regeer.

The initial big opportunity fell to Feyenoord, nearly opening the scoring via a Watanabe header off a free kick. Jorthy Mokio rescued Ajax with a vital headed block on the line.

A cautious opening half hour produced no real threats beyond Watanabe's effort, as keepers Maarten Paes and Timon Wellenreuther handled straightforward stops on efforts from Anis Hadj Moussa and Mika Godts.

Just a minute into the restart, Ayase Ueda rose for the first time and nodded the ball just wide of Paes's upright, creating a scarce opening in the tight contest in Rotterdam.

With only their second effort on goal, young Ajax midfielder Seun Steur, aged 18, netted the opener by grabbing a loose ball and smashing it beyond Wellenreuther for his maiden Eredivisie strike.

Feyenoord responded with sustained pressing, yet failed to register a single shot, leaving the home side with fewer than 20 minutes to salvage a key Klassieker clash.

A lifeline arrived for Feyenoord when replacement Kian Fitz-Jim fouled Jordan Lotomba after losing the ball, leading referee Danny Makkelie to award a spot kick in the 82nd minute. Jakub Moder converted by blasting it into the top right corner, levelling at 1-1 with less than six minutes remaining.

In the closing quarter hour, Feyenoord ramped up the assault on Ajax as the locals sensed vulnerability. Danish forward Casper Tengstedt saw his bending shot parried by Paes before Feyenoord effectively dropped to ten players with Anis Hadj Moussa clutching his groin, unable to be replaced as Van Persie had exhausted his changes.

The 1-1 result stood firm in a lacklustre, back line dominated Klassieker, keeping Feyenoord five points clear of Ajax.

A victory for Ajax might have allowed PSV to clinch the Eredivisie crown with a success against Telstar later that Sunday, yet their maximum gap now reaches 18 points, postponing any formal title celebration for the moment.
