Moroccan outlets criticise Senegal's conduct in AFCON final yet acknowledge their edge on the pitch
Moroccan news sources on Monday echoed widespread criticism of Senegal after the West African side momentarily left the pitch before coming back to defeat the hosts in the Africa Cup of Nations decider.
Following a 50 year absence from glory Morocco seemed poised for success when granted a contentious spot kick right at the end of regular play. The effort was held up as multiple Senegal squad members exited the field. Once he finally attempted it Brahim Diaz failed to convert. Senegal then triumphed 1-0 during the additional period.
A Moroccan publication Le360 labelled the encounter a "lost chance at legend" while journal TelQuel termed it "an ordeal".
Printed daily Le Matin directed blame towards the Atlas Lions manager Walid Regragui noting that "the tactician failed to uphold his promises having often boasted about securing the prize".
The outlet further mourned the absence of sportsmanship throughout the contest attributing the almost 20 minute hold up post penalty call to Senegal.
Certain Senegal supporters from the far side of the venue hurled seats and various items while trying to access the turf.
Online portal Ledesk branded Senegal's actions as "baffling non football" though sources such as Le360 conceded that Senegal proved "stronger during the action" and that they "earned their success legitimately".
"In the end that is the nature of the sport" penned Le360 encouraging Morocco to "recover swiftly" ahead of the upcoming World Cup in summer.
