Marseille exact revenge over Toulouse to climb to third in Ligue 1

Mason Greenwood netted the sole goal to give Marseille a 1-0 victory over Toulouse on Saturday, boosting them to third place in Ligue 1.

This weekend brought multiple revenge triumphs, allowing Marseille to settle the score just three days following their penalty exit from the French Cup courtesy of Toulouse.

After 18 minutes, Igor Paixao broke clear along the left, prompting Greenwood to surge forward from midfield and volley home the winger's cutback with conviction.

Ten minutes afterwards, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seized on a wayward backpass by Cristian Casseres, sidestepped Toulouse custodian Guillaume Restes, yet scuffed his shot wide.

Marseille adopted a cautious approach after the break, while Toulouse's best effort was a Yann Gboho attempt that crashed off the crossbar.

Withdrawn at the 65-minute mark after receiving a caution, Greenwood now tops the goal charts with 15 strikes, nudging ahead of Strasbourg forward Joaquin Panichelli.

The day's opening fixtures highlighted the scramble to avoid the two direct relegation slots.

Auxerre bolstered their position in 18th, the relegation playoff berth, through a 0-0 home stalemate with Strasbourg, creating a two-point buffer over Nantes, who suffered a 1-0 home defeat to local outfit Angers.

The previous evening, Monaco avenged their Champions League ousting by securing a 3-1 win at Paris Saint-Germain.

This outcome disrupted PSG's drive for a fifth successive Ligue 1 championship. Second-placed Lens might narrow the summit gap to one point with a Sunday success against cellar-dwelling Metz.

Separately, Lyon hold the opportunity to regain third position via a win against Paris FC.
