Macedonian icon warns that being favourites might weigh heavily on Denmark during play-off encounter

Denmark failed to secure direct entry to the World Cup after Scotland scored twice in the closing stages during their tense qualifier in Glasgow last November, leaving them to navigate the play-offs for a chance at their eighth appearance in the FIFA tournament.

Although North Macedonia boasts a record of shocking results in play-offs, such as their victory over Italy in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Denmark enters the showdown at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen as the obvious frontrunners, with Brian Riemers team placed 21st globally compared to North Macedonias 66th position.

However, Pancev, who led the team against the European title holders Denmark featuring stars like Peter Schmeichel in the Euro 1996 qualifying rounds, believes the weight of such a crucial World Cup qualifier could prove overwhelming for the Danes.

"Denmark are the favourites and with the favourite's role on their side, the pressure is on them, and it might be difficult for them to justify that role. We don't have anything to lose, and as was the case in Palermo (where they beat Italy in 2022), maybe we'll surprise them and achieve a positive result."

"The main thing is to believe in ourselves, but it won't be easy."

Should the outsiders pull off an upset against Denmark in Copenhagen, they would then face either the Czech Republic or Ireland away from home in the final, with a spot at the 2026 World Cup at stake.

"If by chance, God willing, we win, I think that Ireland would be more favourable opponents for us, because I think the Czech Republic plays way more creative football," Pancev states.

"The Czechs know how to create chances and are more dangerous on the ball. The Irish are way more predictable with their long balls, jumps, and I think we can be much more competitive against them."

Denmark will take on North Macedonia at Parken Stadium on Thursday evening at 20.45 CET. The victor will advance to meet either the Czech Republic or the Republic of Ireland on the road on 31 March for the play-off decider.
