Juventus Draw 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon Hindering Champions League Progress
Juventus managed only a 1-1 draw against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, as Luciano Spallettis fresh squad missed out on their initial victory in this years Champions League.
Dusan Vlahovic secured a share of the points for Juventus in Turin, nudging in Khephren Thurams low delivery in the 34th minute to level after Maximiliano Araujos early strike for the Portuguese title holders.
Juventus sit just outside the drop zone in the standings with a mere three points from four outings in Europes top club tournament.
"It was a tough beginning but we then gained command of the match," Spalletti remarked to Sky Sport.
"The thing that pleases me and offers optimism is our strong roster, featuring players of genuine talent."
Sporting, on the other hand, are comfortably placed in the playoff spots midway through the league stage, boasting seven points.
Rui Borges side linger just beyond the automatic last-16 berths due to goal difference, though that position may shift following Wednesdays games.
"We are disappointed with the outcome since we feel we could have achieved greater things. We performed solidly, outperforming them despite their quality," Vlahovic commented.
"The missing piece was that additional goal, thats how it goes. I trust we keep this form but start securing victories."
Sporting controlled the early exchanges, and it came as little shock when Araujo rifled in the first goal via the post in the 12th minute.
The away team nearly doubled their lead soon after, with Francisco Trincaos heavily deflected effort rebounding off the crossbar.
This near miss spurred Juventus into action, as they took charge for the remainder of the first half, an energised Vlahovic threatening twice before slotting in his seventh goal of the campaign.
Juventus had attempted to sell Vlahovic during the summer window, and as the clubs top earner, he appeared destined to depart when his deal ends next summer.
However, Giorgio Chiellini, a legendary figure and now Juventus strategic director, indicated that options remain open for Vlahovic to prolong his time in Turin.
"We have discussed it, but my focus is on the present. My sole aim is Saturdays clash against local foes Torino, where we will strive for a triumph," Vlahovic added.
Following Vlahovics equaliser, the sides neutralised one another until replacement Jonathan David nodded a prime opportunity directly at Sporting keeper Rui Silva in added time.
