Japan Coach Moriyasu Backs Free Agent Tomiyasu for World Cup Inclusion

Japan's national team coach Hajime Moriyasu announced on Monday that defender Takehiro Tomiyasu remains a potential selection for the World Cup squad, even without a club since his departure from Arsenal in July.

Over the last two years, Tomiyasu has seen limited action due to persistent injuries, leading him to mutually end his Arsenal contract with a year remaining so he could prioritise recovery.

At 27 years old, the player continues as a free agent with more than six months until the tournament, yet Moriyasu envisions him contributing to Japan's efforts in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"In short, yes, I believe he can join the team," Moriyasu commented before Wednesdays friendly match against Bolivia in Tokyo.

"Provided he regains top form, he could play a key role in Japans bid to triumph at the North American World Cup."

Tomiyasu transferred to Arsenal from Bologna in August 2021, featuring in 84 matches across various competitions during his stint in the English capital.

However, injuries restricted him to just one outing for the club in the 2024-25 campaign, and he is now focused on achieving full fitness.

With 42 international appearances for Japan, including participation in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Tomiyasu has been absent from national duty since June of the previous year.

"We maintain regular communication to monitor his progress," Moriyasu added.

"While its uncertain exactly how fit he will become, if he demonstrates strong performances in matches, I would certainly consider him for the squad."
