Ibrahim Hassan, Egypt national team director, cautions Salah on potential MLS transfer pitfalls
At 33, Salah remains undecided on his future after wrapping up a remarkably fruitful nine-year period at Liverpool, during which he claimed two Premier League crowns and the Champions League trophy.
Don Garber, the MLS Commissioner, has voiced his enthusiasm for seeing Salah grace the league, yet it remains uncertain if any MLS outfits will pursue his signature.
"In my view, I would much rather he continued playing in Europe," Hassan shared with On Sports. "There are reports of interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and various Italian Serie A clubs."
"Heading to Major League Soccer? It would sideline him from the limelight far too much. Folks would recall Salah no better than I recall Lionel Messi these days; I hardly make an effort to tune into his games."
Post his trophy-filled eras at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, the Argentina skipper Messi signed with Inter Miami in 2023, soon after claiming the World Cup, and has since become the team's leading goalscorer ever.
Hassan indicated that the Saudi Pro League could serve as a solid alternative should Salah decline to remain in Europe.
"Without bids from European sides, transferring to the Saudi league makes sense, particularly rubbing shoulders with icons like Cristiano Ronaldo," noted Hassan, the identical twin of Egypt's head coach Hossam Hassan.
An ongoing injury benches Salah, causing him to skip Egypt's current preparatory camp ahead of the North America-hosted World Cup.
Egypt will clash with Spain in a preseason match in Barcelona on Tuesday, coming off a 4-0 triumph versus Saudi Arabia in Jeddah last Friday.
The seven-time African title holders sit in Group G, grouped with Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran, for the World Cup spanning from June 11 to July 19.
