Hansi Flick Confirms Marc-Andre ter Stegen Loan to Girona from Barcelona

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has verified Tuesday news that experienced keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to move on loan to local rivals Girona.

The German shot-stopper Ter Stegen has dropped down the ranks at Barcelona behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny.

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup the 33 year old custodian requires consistent matches to stake his claim for a starting spot with Germany at the finals.

This morning Marc mentioned he is heading to Girona Flick stated during a press conference before Wednesdays Champions League encounter against Slavia Prague.

I regard Marc as an outstanding goalkeeper. We opted for a varied approach for the clubs long term plans and I believe that was the correct choice. Yet I hope everything goes well for him since he remains an exceptional talent.

Perhaps we will spot him featuring for Germany at the World Cup. I am keeping my fingers crossed for that and he certainly has strong prospects.

Having arrived at Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014 Ter Stegen has secured six La Liga crowns and one Champions League trophy plus further accolades with the club.

A major knee problem sidelined him for most of the previous campaign prompting Barcelona to recall Szczesny from retirement as cover.

A further setback has limited Ter Stegen to just one outing so far this term.

Ter Stegen stayed behind in Prague where Barcelona seek to clinch a top eight position in the Champions League league stage.

The squad is missing the banned Lamine Yamal for Wednesdays fixture set in freezing temperatures.

The positive side is that the players need to keep moving as it generates heat Flick quipped.

Barcelona saw their 11 match victory streak halted by a loss to Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday.

Flick suggested this might sharpen his sides performance especially their goal conversion.

We competed at the top tier and that is my expectation it was preferable to slip like this rather than deliver a poor showing he remarked.

This might boost our assurance in our methods a touch but we must sharpen up in the final third that is my demand for the group.
