Fred Rutten steps down from Curacao coaching position with rumours of Dick Advocaat comeback

This resignation represents a sudden change for the FFK after they firmly turned down requests from team members and backers on Friday to bring back Advocaat.

The FFK explained that Rutten left after productive discussions with federation leader Gilbert Martina. Although Rutten was not at the centre of the internal issues he decided to leave in order to safeguard the teams working atmosphere.

"A situation that harms good working ties between athletes and personnel cannot be permitted to develop" Rutten stated in an official announcement shared on social platforms. "It makes sense to withdraw now. The clock is ticking and Curacao needs to progress."

At 78 years old Advocaat guided the Caribbean nation to a groundbreaking World Cup spot in November though he resigned in February to support his daughter during her severe health problems. Rutten took over as his successor at that point.

Reports from Dutch outlets on Monday indicate Advocaat might be willing to come back now that his daughters condition has gotten better.

The experienced manager who could set a record as the eldest coach at a World Cup if he joins the trip has strong support from many in the squad according to sources.

A media briefing is set for Tuesday to share more about the handover.
