Experienced South African Manager Joins Team to Guide African Side for 2026 FIFA World Cup

De Sa is set to serve as assistant to Queiroz, the ex Bafana Bafana, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager, a position he has taken up multiple times previously, including for the 2010 and 2022 World Cups.

Aged 61, De Sa, who played in goal for Bafana Bafana and led Orlando Pirates to the 2013 CAF Champions League final, teamed up with Queiroz once more when Egypt advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations final in Cameroon at the beginning of 2022, suffering a penalty shootout defeat to Senegal.

De Sa assisted Queiroz in his two most recent head coaching roles with Qatar and Oman, and the pair are now reuniting with Ghana, who brought in Queiroz as their manager just a few months ahead of the World Cup start.

The Black Stars parted ways with manager Otto Addo after defeats in their March internationals against Austria and Germany, and soon after installed the 73 year old Queiroz as his replacement.

De Sa remains a close and trusted associate of Queiroz, with their partnership beginning when Queiroz managed South Africa from 2000 to 2002, during which De Sa acted as goalkeeping coach. He also supported Queiroz while the latter guided Portugal at the 2010 World Cup.

On his own merits, De Sa has managed Wits University, Santos, Pirates, Ajax Cape Town and Platinum Stars, accumulating over 500 games at the pinnacle of South African football.

During his playing days, he represented Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns, securing one international cap for South Africa back in 1993.

Queiroz and De Sa face a tight schedule to prepare for the World Cup, though Ghana has lined up two warm up matches before the event unfolds in North America.

Ghana takes on Mexico in New York on 22 May and Wales in Cardiff on 2 June.

For the main competition, the Black Stars find themselves in Group L, up against Croatia, England and Panama.
