EXCLUSIVE: Matt Le Tissier apologetic for Southampton players and fans post expulsion

The Saints are set to compete in the Championship next season after their appeal against expulsion in the wake of 'Spygate' was rejected by an independent panel.

Consequently, Hull City will face Middlesbrough in Saturday's play off final, marking a sorrowful week for Southampton supporters.

In an exclusive conversation with Tribal Football through Midnite, Le Tissier shared his thoughts on his former club and its fans, expressing sympathy for their treatment during the appeal.

Sympathy for players and fans

Southampton have been excluded from the play offs. This was significant news yesterday. Are you disheartened by the verdict, or do you believe it is warranted?

"Firstly, our club breached the rules, so punishment is anticipated, and that was never in doubt. Southampton fully cooperated with the commission and the ongoing investigation, unequivocally condemning the actions.

"Thus, punishment was expected. However, the penalties appear excessive relative to the infraction. The sought advantages were minimal, making the sanctions seem disproportionate, especially when compared to penalties imposed on other clubs for similar or graver offenses. A penalty was necessary, but its severity is questionable."

How crushing is this for the Southampton squad after their relentless effort this season to reach the final?

"My heart goes out to two groups. The players, who have shown tremendous dedication, embarking on an extraordinary journey, only to have their Premier League dream snatched away. For some, this might have been their sole opportunity to play at that level.

"Their chance was lost due to circumstances beyond their control, which feels unjust. Similarly, the fans, who invested their hard earned money to support the team at Middlesbrough and packed St. Mary's last Tuesday, now face the bitter realization that their expenditure was in vain.

"In today's economic climate, where every penny counts, this seems particularly harsh on the supporters. It's a bitter pill to swallow."

Do you believe the Southampton squad will be incensed by this decision? Or might their anger be directed at the club?

"I suspect they would be. Honestly, if I were among them, I'd feel aggrieved.

"After pouring everything into the season, to have it all undone by such a minor infraction, aimed at securing negligible advantages, would undoubtedly stir frustration."

Promotion prospects: Hull or Middlesbrough?

Southampton secured a 2 1 aggregate victory over Middlesbrough in the semi finals before their expulsion. Hull, trailing Middlesbrough by one spot in the standings, advanced to the final after a 2 0 aggregate win against Millwall.

The Tigers and The Boro last graced the Premier League in the 2016 17 season, and their prolonged absence might conclude this weekend. Le Tissier weighed in on which team stands a better chance of survival upon promotion.

It's been ages since Hull or Middlesbrough featured in the Premier League. Is it refreshing to see a non yo yo team potentially promoted?

"Absolutely, diversity in the Premier League is vital. It injects freshness into the competition.

"Promotion for either would be monumental, though it might feel somewhat unearned for Middlesbrough, given their semi final defeat. Hull, conversely, might harbor resentment towards Middlesbrough, feeling they shouldn't have been their opponents initially. Emotions will run high, but such is the nature of the sport."

Between Hull and Middlesbrough, which team do you reckon has a better shot at survival? Many promoted teams face immediate relegation. Who do you think could defy the odds?

"Based on current squads, having observed both teams this season, both might find it challenging, which is typical. Sunderland's approach of overhauling their squad underscores the necessity for significant reinforcement.

"Any team ascending to the Premier League without substantial squad enhancement is likely to struggle. A fair assessment would require waiting until August, once the squads are finalized."
