Enciso Drives Strasbourg Comeback Against Mainz to Secure Conference League Semifinal Spot
Down 2-0 after the initial match in Germany, Strasbourg ignited their challenge in the middle of the opening period, quickly reducing Mainz's lead.
Following a subdued start at the Stade de la Meinau, the contest nearly shifted dramatically on the 19th minute when Dominik Kohr narrowly avoided dismissal for striking Diego Moreira with his elbow. Gary O’Neil’s heated objections from the sidelines had no impact, and Moreira almost retaliated right away with a spectacular overhead kick that prompted a sharp stop from Mainz keeper Daniel Batz.
As Strasbourg finally hit their stride, Sebastian Nanasi opened the scoring, arriving spot-on to slot home Julio Enciso’s precise pull-back, allowing the home team to dominate proceedings.
Abdoul Ouattara’s powerful half-volley skimmed just wide from afar, while Enciso drew yet another excellent stop from Batz, with Strasbourg surging ahead full of belief, until the duo linked up again for Ouattara to equalise the overall score via a forceful header from close range.
The vital break at the interval let Urs Fischer try to reclaim the initiative by bringing on creative midfielder Nadiem Amiri, enabling Mainz to push forward more effectively; still, they faced constant disruption from Strasbourg’s aggressive pressing and determination to regain control.
Strasbourg missed a golden chance to go ahead on aggregate when Batz thwarted substitute Emmanuel Emegha from the penalty kick following Valentin Barco’s foul inside the box.
However, Strasbourg’s relentless effort bore fruit, and as Martial Godo danced past Mainz’s disorganised backline, Enciso grabbed the opportunity to blast the hosts into a commanding 3-0 lead in the match, completely reversing the tie.
Just five minutes on, Strasbourg added to their tally as Emegha redeemed his prior penalty failure, with Enciso crowning his outstanding display via another superb pass to find the young forward heading to Chelsea, sealing their progression to the tournament’s final eight.
With their desperate late efforts to salvage anything falling flat, a disheartened Mainz must now contemplate the frustration of failing to capitalise on their strong position from the opening leg victory, in a match that Strasbourg’s fans will cherish for years.
