Chelsea top four push damaged by Newcastle defeat

The match saw Newcastle's Anthony Gordon secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea this Saturday, significantly hindering the London club's chances of securing a spot in the Champions League.

Gordon scored during the opening period at Stamford Bridge, resulting in Chelsea slipping to fifth in the Premier League standings.

Following a heavy 5-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie earlier that week, Chelsea appeared to carry over the poor form with a fragmented performance in west London.

The night began oddly with Chelsea's squad oddly encircling referee Paul Tierney in their pre-game gathering, only to conclude with their European aspirations in turmoil.

Under Liam Rosenior, the team sits three points behind Manchester United in third and Aston Villa in fourth, yet they have already played an additional match compared to these competitors.

Manchester United and Aston Villa face off at Old Trafford on Sunday, and if sixth-placed Liverpool, who trail Chelsea on goal difference, manage to not lose against Tottenham that day, they will surpass the Blues in the table.

Newcastle too competed in the Champions League midweek, achieving a respectable 1-1 stalemate with Barcelona at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe's team displayed greater energy than their opponents right from the start of the game.

In the 18th minute, Tino Livramento's delivery pierced Chelsea's backline, enabling Joe Willock to advance freely down the centre without challenge.

Willock delivered the decisive through ball to Gordon, and the England attacker coolly slotted the ball into the unguarded goal.

Soon enough, murmurs of dissatisfaction echoed from the Chelsea faithful, as each thwarted attempt or errant ball heightened the tension among supporters.

The opening half offered scant comfort to the irritated crowd, with Chelsea struggling to capitalise on their control of the ball.

Robert Sanchez parried Willock's effort over the bar from close range, and after Jacob Ramsey's strike ricocheted off Trevoh Chalobah, the goalkeeper made a sharp stop.

Returning in place of the sidelined Filip Jorgensen, Sanchez almost added to his season's errors, though Wesley Fofana rescued him following the goalkeeper's misplaced distribution.

Chelsea's forward Liam Delap blazed a shot well over from close proximity, followed by Chalobah nodding astray while marked tightly by Ramsdale.

Reece James nearly equalised with a free-kick that grazed the frame, and Joao Pedro's effort cleared the crossbar entirely, yet Newcastle repelled all advances.
