Cape Verde Footballer Heading to World Cup Faces Rape Probe After FIFA Series Game

Michael Burgess of the New Zealand Herald noted on Sunday that an unnamed member of the Cape Verde national squad is accused of assaulting an individual following the FIFA Series encounter with Chile on March 27th in Auckland. The alleged event occurred at the teams training accommodation shortly after their 4-2 defeat at Eden Park.

New Zealand authorities verified that "a claim is being examined, brought to our attention on April 10, 2026, in downtown Auckland. Further details cannot be shared currently," according to the Herald.

Burgess indicated that the implicated Cape Verde athlete is expected to join the national side for their debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup next month.

A person connected to the victim informed the New Zealand Herald that the affected individual has been finding it hard to manage since the occurrence.

Upon inquiry from the New Zealand publication, FIFA, which supposedly had no prior knowledge of the situation, declined to offer remarks on the matter or indicate plans for an internal probe, describing it as "far too premature" for such action. The governing bodies for football in New Zealand and Cape Verde similarly avoided addressing the issue, although FIFA mentioned reaching out to the New Zealand association as the organiser of the FIFA Series.

Cape Verde earned their inaugural spot in the FIFA World Cup by leading a qualifying section that included Cameroon, Libya, Angola, Mauritius, and eSwatini.

In the competition hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America, Cape Verde has been placed in Group F alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.
