Al Ahly keeper El-Shenawy banned four games for striking referee
The Egyptian international, who sat on the substitutes' bench during Tuesday's match, became furious when Al Ahly's claim for a penalty after a handball incident in added time was rejected.
"He has received a four-match ban and a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds ($942) for assaulting the referee via pushing or pulling (application of the hand without force)," the league announced in its official statement.
This suspension will keep El-Shenawy, projected to serve as Egypt's primary goalkeeper for the World Cup in North America, out of action until the concluding week of the league play-offs.
Al Ahly hold third position with 41 points, trailing the top team Zamalek by five points.
