Which South African club has supplied the most Bafana Bafana players for World Cups since 1998?

South Africa made their World Cup debut in 1998, qualified again in 2002, and then hosted the event in 2010. A 16 year absence followed before Bafana Bafana finally secured their return.

Over these four tournaments, Orlando Pirates have supplied 14 World Cup players for South Africa, the highest number. That includes two players in 1998 when Bafana Bafana first appeared in France. For the 2026 edition, they have eight representatives.

The Orlando Pirates players selected are Willem Jackson and Jerry Sikhosana in 1998, Thabo Mngomeni in 2002, Moeneeb Josephs, Teko Modise and Lucas Thwala in 2010, and for 2026: Oswin Appollis, Sipho Chaine, Evidence Makgopa, Thalente Mbatha, Relebohile Mofokeng, Tshepang Moremi, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Nkosinathi Sibisi.

Mamelodi Sundowns have now contributed 13 players in total. They had just one player across South Africa's first two World Cup appearances in 1998 and 2002, but this number has grown considerably, with eight players selected for the 2026 finals.

The Sundowns representatives include Themba Mnguni in 1998, Matthew Booth, Siboniso Gaxa, Surprise Moriri and Katlego Mphela in 2010, and for 2026: Jayden Adams, Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Khuliso Mudau, Khulumani Ndamane, Iqraam Rayners, Ronwen Williams and Themba Zwane.

Bradley Cross, a surprise inclusion, brings Kaizer Chiefs' overall number of World Cup representatives to eight.

An additional 12 South African clubs have supplied Bafana Bafana World Cup players, with Polokwane City and Siwelele making their first appearance on the list at this year's tournament.

For their four World Cup campaigns, South Africa have also picked players from 37 overseas clubs across 18 different countries.

Four foreign clubs have contributed more than one Bafana Bafana player to a single World Cup. Ajax Amsterdam provided Benedict McCarthy in 1998 and Steven Pienaar in 2002. Lokomotiv Moscow gave Jacob Lekgetho and Benedict Vilakazi, both in 2002. Swiss outfit St Gallen supplied David Nyathi in 1998 and Teboho Mokoena in 2002. Turkish club Vanspor contributed Lebogang Morula and Alfred Phiri, both in 1998.

Eight English clubs have provided World Cup bound Bafana Bafana players, more than any other country outside South Africa.

These clubs are Bolton Wanderers (Mark Fish, 1998), Burnley (Lyle Foster, 2026), Everton (Steven Pienaar, 2010), Fulham (Kagisho Dikgacoi, 2010), Leeds United (Lucas Radebe in 1998 and 2002), Manchester United (Quinton Fortune, 2002), Portsmouth (Aaron Mokoena, 2010) and Watford (Pierre Issa, 2002).
