James Milner Announces Retirement from Football After a Remarkable 24-Year Career
The adaptable midfielder began his professional journey at Leeds, subsequently featuring for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and, most recently, Brighton.
Across those stints, Milner secured three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two EFL Cups and the Champions League.
He amassed 658 appearances in the top division, surpassing the previous record established by Gareth Barry in the 2025/26 campaign.
On the international stage, Milner collected 61 caps for England from 2009 to 2016.
"Following 24 campaigns in the Premier League, the moment has come to conclude my playing career," Milner shared in a social media statement.
"To the supporters, I extend my gratitude. To everyone who backed me throughout, your support was more valuable than you realise. And to those who offered criticism, thank you as well. All of you contributed to making this journey unforgettable and helped mould me both as a player and a person.
"To my family, I thank you for every sacrifice, each mile journeyed and every word of encouragement. None of this would have happened without you.
"I depart from the sport with enormous pride, thankfulness and recollections that will remain with me always. The game has afforded me more than I ever dreamt possible, and I shall forever be grateful for the chances it gave me.
"My thanks go to all who have accompanied me on this journey."
