Veteran Axel Witsel Admits New Head Coach Rudi Garcia Has Re-Energised Belgium Squad

Few football players at the World Cup have enjoyed such a lengthy international career as the 37 year old Witsel, who made his senior debut back in 2008 and is now participating in his fourth World Cup this year.

He formed part of Belgium's 'golden generation' that reached the quarter finals in 2014 and the semi finals in 2018, but was also in the side that suffered a first round exit in Qatar in 2022.

He announced his retirement from international football shortly after, but was later persuaded to return for Euro 2024, where he played a supporting role and was again selected for the World Cup squad.

'I am really happy to be here. Not everyone gets the chance to take part in a fourth World Cup, and I am proud of that,' he told reporters.

'When I look at this squad, maybe it is comparable to 2014 in Brazil, with that blend of experienced players, the new generation, and the atmosphere we have within the group.

'Rudi Garcia has managed to re-energise the whole squad,' Witsel said of the French coach who was appointed at the beginning of last year.

'As soon as I came back to the group, I noticed that little positive something, that extra spark, especially since the start of our preparations. Being at a World Cup is still the ultimate level. I understand how important it is to be part of an event like this.'

Witsel, who was relegated with Girona from La Liga at the end of the season, is mostly used as a substitute.

'I know my role, and it is different from what it used to be. The coach knows he can rely on me, whether as a starter or coming off the bench. I am available, that is why I am here,' he added.

'The most important thing is the group. There are no egos in this squad. We are not into that kind of thing. That is why the atmosphere is really good.'
