Tottenham lose at Chelsea to take the Premier League relegation scrap to the final day

The hosts nearly suffered a disastrous start when Jorrel Hato loose backpass unsettled Robert Sanchez but fortunately went wide of the post.

On the 10 minute mark Sanchez was diving across his goal line but Mathys Tel back post header rebounded off the post.

After weathering those initial threats Chelsea started to settle. Antonin Kinsky palmed Cole Palmer shot around the post just before the 15 minute point but could do nothing when Enzo Fernandez had a go three minutes after that.

The Chelsea captain bent a precise shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards to get the first goal and reach double figures for league goals this season.

The hosts dominated thereafter with Liam Delap firing over inside the area before Fernandez hit a free kick from a tight angle against the crossbar.

Tel almost hit the stands with Tottenham sole response then Palmer low shot went just wide in added time as the interval arrived with the hosts leading.

Spurs have collected 26 of their 38 points away from home so their fans had hope they could recover in the second half.

Richarlison excluded from Brazil squad for the World Cup only a day earlier met Randal Kolo Muani cross before the hour but his header was saved by Sanchez.

But they conceded on 67 minutes as Pedro Neto far flung cross was neatly controlled by Fernandez who found Andrey Santos with space to finish from six yards.

Spurs appeared finished then but Roberto De Zerbi team increased their efforts and reduced the lead in the 74 minute when substitute Pape Matar Sarr backheel allowed Richarlison to score from close in.

Given their much better goal difference than West Ham Tottenham realised a draw would secure survival so they attacked the Blues until the end.

James Maddison was introduced and had a great opportunity from a tight position stopped by a desperate tackle from Hato and from the corner Micky van de Ven penalty claim was rejected after contact with Marc Cucurella.

Maddison hit a late free kick over the goal meaning Chelsea ended their league winless streak at seven and moved back into European spots while avoiding losing five home league games in a row for the first time.

Tottenham have now gone without a win in their last 10 visits to Stamford Bridge and need to not lose against Everton on Sunday or rely on Leeds beating West Ham to stay up.
