Toronto police make record seizure of counterfeit jerseys prior to World Cup
Police seized counterfeit goods worth over C$3.5 million ($2.53 million) from a warehouse in Mississauga, they said, including more than 16,000 fake jerseys and flags with counterfeit FIFA, Nike, Adidas and Puma branding, as well as two fake World Cup trophies.
Two men have been arrested and charged, according to the police.
Toronto expects over 300,000 visitors during the World Cup, with six matches scheduled in the city, including Canada's opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 12 June.
A complaint was made to the Toronto Police Service FIFA Planning Team Investigative Unit in May, alleging that the accused were supplying products to retail stores and acting as a distributor of fraudulent items.
Police said the items have an estimated street value of C$3,564,000.
