Swedish Winger Gustav Lundgren Ruled Out of World Cup After Achilles Tendon Tear

The 30 year old GAIS forward substituted into the match with just 10 minutes remaining to earn his second international appearance for Sweden, but he collapsed during the warmup on Monday prior to his teams opening Allsvenskan fixture versus Djurgarden, ultimately missing the entire 1 0 loss at home.

Early accounts from the Gamla Ullevi stadium before the game started indicated a grave situation, with Lundgren limping away from the field supported by a pair of his clubs medical personnel.

Medical assessments have since verified that the attacker suffered a complete Achilles tendon rupture, meaning he will be absent from the upcoming World Cup and might sit out the whole 2026 Allsvenskan season.

Lundgren addressed Swedish broadcasters following the game, grappling with the severity of his setback and the implications.

"I'm a bit in shock. I was just going to step back and take a small explosive step, and then I felt something happen," said the GAIS player.

Sweden national team coach Graham Potter must now seek a replacement for a contributor who shone in key moments during recent qualifiers, as Lundgren helped create the series of opportunities that culminated in Viktor Gyokeres scoring the decisive goal.

"Of course you would have wished it had been a different occasion, to go there. When you have a lot to look forward to and have the chance to experience a World Cup, it would have been fun," Lundgren conceded.
