Struggling FC Copenhagen secure Conference League spot after extra time drama in Brondby
FC Copenhagen had the final say in a thrilling derby at Brondby Stadium, booking their place in European football for the next season.
Following a nail biting playoff match for Conference League qualification, FC Copenhagen emerged victorious with a 3 1 win over Brondby. Brondby appeared defeated after Mayckel Lahdo was dismissed, but a late equaliser from the hosts pushed the game into extra time.
Yet, it was the often criticised German forward Youssoufa Moukoko who netted the crucial goals, salvaging some pride for FCK after a disappointing season that saw the club in the Superliga relegation play off for the first time.
This derby win ensures FC Copenhagen will compete in the Conference League qualifiers when the new season begins.
Brondby concluded the season without any silverware. The team narrowly secured fourth place in the Superliga, keeping their European dreams alive, but FC Copenhagen dashed those hopes under the Brondby Stadium sun.
Copenhagen derbies seldom showcase elegant football, and this match was no different. Nonetheless, it was captivating, tense, and full of suspense, despite a goalless first half.
The momentum shifted in FC Copenhagen's favour after 67 minutes when Mayckel Lahdo was shown a red card for stepping on Thomas Delaney. FC Copenhagen capitalised on their extra player ten minutes later as Aurélio Buta surged into the Brondby area and fired past goalkeeper Pastrick Pentz from a tight angle.
Brondby, however, levelled the score just three minutes later when Mads Froekjaer intercepted Junnosuke Suzuki and coolly slotted the ball past Dominik Kotarski.
The red card ultimately proved decisive. Brondby faded in extra time, allowing Youssoufa Moukoko to reclaim the lead for Copenhagen with a clever backheel.
Brondby fans thought they had a last gasp equaliser when Jordi Vanlerberghe struck the ball into the top corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review. Moukoko then sealed Brondby's fate with another goal.
