Spain manager De la Fuente insists national team must prioritise over club relieved interests
The reigning European champions enter next month's competition as strong contenders, with De la Fuente's 26-player squad featuring eight Barcelona stars and none from Madrid's preeminent club, injecting the intense El Clasico rivalry into national team discussions.
Real Madrid defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal were notable omissions from a squad aiming for Spain's second World Cup victory following their 2010 success.
De la Fuente rejected suggestions this selection might alienate Real Madrid supporters.
"For me, the most important team - the absolute priority - is the Spanish national side," De la Fuente stated during a media breakfast hosted by RTVE and EFE.
"Player origins or backgrounds don't factor into my decisions. What counts is having Spanish players who take pride in representing their nation and contributing to a unified country."
Yamal eager for action during injury recovery
Barcelona's representatives include Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres, complemented by seven Premier League based players.
The coach emphasized that purely sporting criteria shaped his selections, acknowledging an inevitable subjective element in squad choices.
"If I ever make an incorrect decision or compromise integrity for results, I'm risking my position," he affirmed.
Spain begin Group H against Cape Verde before meeting Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, though De la Fuente may exercise caution with Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino as they regain fitness.
"We maintain contact with all clubs," he noted. "These players are progressing well physically and in their recovery. I'm confident they'll be ready for our first match."
However, De la Fuente stressed Spain's perspective extends beyond their opening fixture.
"We'd only take risks in World Cup scenarios," he explained. "Our vision covers not just the first match but subsequent games too. If waiting proves necessary, we'll be patient."
Regarding Yamal, Barcelona's 18 year old wing sensation tipped to spearhead Spain's attack, De la Fuente praised his composed mentality.
"Yamal is bursting with enthusiasm and prepared," he remarked. "Despite his youth, he displays exceptional maturity and understands this is his opportunity.
"These moments must be grasped. He recognizes this is his time to shine."
