Scotland's Billy Gilmour to miss 2026 World Cup after knee injury

The 24-year-old Napoli midfielder sustained the injury during Scotland's final warm-up match before the World Cup and will return to his club for rehabilitation.

"I am heartbroken for Billy because he has been a crucial part of our World Cup qualifying journey," Scotland manager Steve Clarke said.

"The timing of this injury is incredibly unfortunate and we are all thinking of him."

Gilmour played a key role in Scotland's successful qualifying campaign and was expected to be a major player at the tournament.

"He knows how highly we regard him as both a player and a person," Clarke added. "I am confident that Billy has many major tournaments ahead of him in the years to come."
