'It’s brutal': Odegaard pledges to come back stronger after devastating PSG penalty loss

The Norwegian, who was replaced in the second half by Viktor Gyokeres, found it difficult to make an impact in his role as playmaker, managing only 12 touches of the ball before being substituted in the 66th minute.

Off the pitch, he could only watch as Gabriel sent his decisive spot-kick over the bar to end the match, but the 27 year old felt his side held their own against the now consecutive champions.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the game, he said: “You want to win so badly and to come away with nothing is brutal. That is part of football, and we have still achieved some incredible things this season. We will get over this loss and come back even stronger next year.”

Despite the match ending 1-1 after extra time, Luis Enrique's team outperformed Arsenal across all attacking metrics, with 21 shots to Arsenal's seven, resulting in an expected goals (xG) of 1.77 to 0.44.

Odegaard was gracious in defeat, believing it was the fine margins over the 120 minutes that could have swung either way.

He added: “It is small margins, especially on penalties.

“I thought we started the game really well. We scored the first goal and after that I thought we defended really well.

“Obviously, PSG had a lot of the ball, but they did not create anything. The penalty, of course, they got their goal. After that it was quite tight... we did everything we could, it is just about losing like that.”

Odegaard has been under scrutiny as the season wound down for his perceived lack of effectiveness in Mikel Arteta's system.

One goal and seven assists was his return across all competitions as Arsenal's campaign ended on a disappointing note, and the former Real Madrid player, now looking ahead to his World Cup finals appearance with Norway, still believes he has more to offer Arsenal.

When asked about his future he responded: “I have a contract here and I am really happy here. That is the situation and hopefully I can stay for many more years.”

Odegaard will now join his Norwegian teammates as they head to the US to face what is potentially the toughest group of the tournament in France, Senegal and Iraq.
