Saudi sovereign wealth fund sells majority stake in Benzema's Al Hilal
Saudi Arabias Public Investment Fund, known for its ownership of Newcastle United in the English Premier League, has divested 70 per cent of its stake in Al Hilal to Kingdom Holding Company, led by the prominent billionaire and royal family member Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
This transaction places the clubs share capital valuation at 1.4bn Saudi riyals, equivalent to 373m dollars.
The move occurs against a backdrop of increased examination regarding the funds backing of LIV Golf, where rumours suggest the alternative golf series could face dissolution owing to potential cuts in Saudi funding.
"Al Hilal represents a key emblem and a point of national honour for Saudis," stated Bin Talal.
"Our purchase reflects strong confidence in sports ability to unite communities and spur progress within the nation.
"Through implementing international investment approaches and fostering key alliances, we aim to realise Al Hilals complete capabilities, all while upholding its legacy and character."
Managed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Public Investment Fund took control of a controlling interest in the Riyadh club in 2023, extending similar investments to three additional Saudi Pro League outfits, including Al Nassr with Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Ahli, and Al Ittihad, under the countrys broader sports funding initiative.
Such financial support allowed Al Hilal to sign several international talents, including the Brazilian forward Neymar, prior to his exit in January 2025.
The French forward Benzema has most recently moved to Al Hilal following the end of his agreement with Al Ittihad.
"This divestment fits with our goal to optimise profits and redirect resources into the local market," according to the funds announcement.
"It bolsters our overarching initiatives to promote growth and economic variety in Saudi Arabia.
"We are creating avenues for substantial change in the sports industry and ensuring lasting benefits."
The fund noted that it has "guided Al Hilals evolution, enabling notable increases in its worth.
"Retaining a shareholding position, we remain committed to aiding Al Hilals ongoing advancement."
