Said brace helps Lens thrash Lyon and end brilliant Ligue 1 campaign in style

After their midweek defeat that had brought the Ligue 1 title race to a close Lens focused on pride alone as second spot was already confirmed.

Lyon on the other hand required victory if they were to have any hope of edging Lille for third place.

Lens however asserted early dominance by netting twice inside the first 32 minutes.

First Kyllian Antonio delivered a fine defence splitting pass that sent Wesley Said clear down the inside left channel where the striker curled an inch perfect finish into the far right corner.

Lyon failed to establish any control and Les Gones found themselves two nil behind shortly after the half hour mark.

Sent away down the left inside the box again this time by Amadou Haidara Said finished clinically once more beating Dominik Greif with a strike into the top of the net.

Lens rounded off an excellent first period with a third goal in added time when a swift counter saw Florian Thauvin advance the ball and feed Florian Sotoca who slotted a low finish past Greif at the near post.

Paula Fonseca introduced a double substitution at the interval hoping to spark a recovery on the final day.

The hosts enjoyed greater possession after the break and Afonso Moreira created a chance by cutting inside from the left yet his effort was easily held by Mathieu Gorgelin.

Any prospect of a fightback vanished almost immediately when Lens struck a fourth goal in the 54th minute after carving open the Lyon back line with little resistance.

Andrija Bulatovic threaded Thauvin in and the French winger claimed the standout goal of the evening with a delicate chip over the helpless Greif.

The visitors high defensive line was repeatedly exposed though they still posed danger in attack where Roman Yaremchuk hit the crossbar following neat interplay with Pavel Sulc.

The home team kept pushing with Corentin Tolisso firing narrowly wide of the left upright before Gorgelin saved Sulc first time shot.

Ultimately Lyon could not salvage any dignity and concluded a turbulent campaign that featured a 13 game winning streak by suffering a four nil defeat on home soil.

Lens performed fluently throughout the evening and appear well placed to claim a first ever Coupe de France triumph when they meet a Nice side who themselves face Ligue 1 relegation play offs.
