Qatar claim first ever World Cup point in stoppage time as Switzerland regret missed chances

Qatar, under Julen Lopetegui, almost had a dream start in Santa Clara despite winning only two of their last 15 matches against European teams (D5, L8). Manuel Akanji's loose touch allowed Edmilson Junior to race through on goal, but the Al-Duhail striker could not guide his shot past the imposing frame of Gregor Kobel.

That early warning prompted an immediate response from the Swiss, as Dan Ndoye saw a low shot saved by Mahmoud Abunada.

Switzerland maintained the pressure and were rewarded in the 17th minute when Remo Freuler was brought down by Abunada inside the area. Breel Embolo stepped up and confidently slotted home his 25th international goal from the spot.

Murat Yakin's team continued to look dangerous as the first half wore on, with Ndoye twice coming close to adding to their advantage. At the other end, Edmilson saw another fine chance thwarted by Kobel's legs.

The last opportunity of the first half fell to Michel Aebischer, but his goal-bound effort was cleared off the line by Pedro Miguel, meaning Qatar remained within one goal at half-time.

Seeking some breathing room, Switzerland carried their momentum into the early stages of the second half, with Granit Xhaka unleashing a powerful 25-yard strike that flew just over the crossbar.

Despite dominating possession in the final third, Switzerland could not find a second goal. Abunada made a smart save from Ruben Vargas, and then Embolo poked a close-range effort wide.

Despite their wastefulness in front of goal, it seemed Switzerland had done enough to win. However, in a dramatic late twist, Qatar grabbed a last-gasp equaliser. Captain Khoukhi rose highest at the back post to head home from Homan Al Amin's cross, securing a historic point for Lopetegui's side.
