Ralf Rangnick handed contract extension by Austria through to 2028

The 67-year-old German tactician oversaw Manchester United between 2021 and 2022 before taking over Austria later that year. His earlier agreement was due to conclude after the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Rangnick guided Austria to their first World Cup qualification in 28 years.

"Rangnick will carry on his successful spell with the Austrian national side and stay in his position at the Austrian Football Association at least until UEFA EURO 2028," the federation said in a statement.

"Under Rangnick's guidance, the Austrian team has progressed remarkably both on the pitch and in organisational terms over recent years, and has become established on the world stage."

Austria commence their World Cup campaign on Tuesday against Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. They are in Group J, which also features defending champions Argentina and Algeria.
