PSG clinch fifth successive Ligue 1 crown

Although they have delivered impressive performances in the Champions League to advance to the final for the second year running, the European title holders domestic efforts have fallen somewhat short of perfection.

Losses against Lyon, Monaco, Marseille, and Rennes, combined with five draws, have enabled Lens to mount a genuine threat to their position at the top.

Nevertheless, having secured three victories from their previous four outings, Luis Enriques team approached the showdown with the rivals confident that avoiding defeat would confirm their status as champions once more, and they rose to the occasion.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a standout performer for the team this campaign, opened the scoring with a goal in the 29th minute to lead 1-0. Lens generated several promising opportunities thereafter but failed to capitalise, and they were made to pay when Ibrahim Mbaye extended the advantage to 2-0 deep into added time, thereby wrapping up the championship.

This achievement represents the first instance of PSG claiming five consecutive Ligue 1 titles, positioning them as only the second club to accomplish this feat, behind Lyon who dominated from 2001 to 2006.

That Lyon squad proceeded to add two more titles in succession, and the Paris outfit will harbour hopes of emulating such success.

For the moment, however, their focus shifts to the Champions League, with aspirations of overcoming Arsenal to retain their European honour and solidify their reputation among the sports most legendary teams.
