Paraguay boss asserts that they have 'already won' by earning a World Cup place, but have their sights on bigger goals
Paraguay take on co-hosts the United States in their opening Group D fixture on Friday, a game that represents the South American nation's first World Cup outing since 2010.
"In my opinion, they have already won," Alfaro said of his squad during a pre-match press conference on the day before the match.
"After 16 years, they secured qualification when it appeared impossible, when there was no hope."
The Argentine coach added that the team had regained its bond with the supporters: "They have recovered Paraguay's DNA."
While recognising the emotion surrounding Paraguay's comeback, Alfaro stressed that his team's ambitions go beyond simply taking part.
"We are not here merely to be part of the World Cup," he said. "We are here to compete."
Alfaro expected the opening test to be tough, with the United States playing on home ground under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
"Of course, it is complicated to face one of the hosts," Alfaro said, highlighting the quality of their opponents' European-based players.
Paraguay would need to display concentration and discipline, he added, particularly against a US team who were dangerous from set pieces.
Paraguay also received positive signs regarding the fitness of Strasbourg winger Julio Enciso, who is recovering from an injury picked up shortly before the tournament.
"Julio is doing very well," Alfaro said, adding that he had followed the necessary steps in his rehabilitation and would continue to be evaluated before a decision is made on his availability.
Alfaro said the squad, and the country, wanted Enciso to be fit, and suggested he would start if available.
As excitement builds ahead of Paraguay's long-awaited return to the World Cup, Alfaro said he had encouraged his players to remain calm as they counted down the final hours before kick-off.
"We waited 16 years," he said. "We can wait one more day."
