Morten Wieghorst to depart as assistant coach for Denmark national team

The agreement concludes in June 2026 without renewal, bringing to a close his six years serving as deputy to Kasper Hjulmand initially and later Brian Riemer.

"I have felt certain about this choice for some time", Morten Wieghorst explains to dr.dk.

"Regrettably, I shall not conclude with a major tournament appearance, and quite a few of us feel deeply saddened and let down by that, yet such is the case."

Following Kasper Hjulmands exit as manager after the 2024 European Championship, Morten Wieghorst advanced to interim manager for the senior national squad.

Yet he needed to step away on medical leave owing to stress related problems, during which Lars Knudsen assumed his duties. Brian Riemer subsequently joined as full time manager, and upon recovery from his health issues, Morten Wieghorst resumed as supporting coach.

Wieghorst makes no secret of how much of an honour it has been for him to contribute to the Denmark mens national team.

"I relish coaching the finest talents from Denmark. I relish partnering with the full team. We have forged an outstanding partnership", he remarks.

"A truly distinctive atmosphere prevails within and surrounding the national team, and I have enjoyed nearly six fulfilling years packed with memorable moments. There have been setbacks too, but predominantly positive outcomes and notable successes."
