Messi exits game with injury concern before World Cup

Argentinian football legend Messi was taken off in the 73rd minute at a rain drenched Nu Stadium in Miami after holding the back of his left leg and asking to be substituted.

The 38 year old superstar seemed to walk normally as he went straight down the tunnel after leaving the match, which Miami eventually won 6 4.

Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos stated post match that it was premature to conclude if Messi was hurt, hinting that the substitution might have been a precaution due to the soggy pitch.

"As of now, we lack a medical update on that matter, but one should be available soon," Hoyos remarked when questioned about Messi's status.

"He was clearly feeling fatigued in that aspect it is indeed fatigue. He was exhausted, the pitch was difficult, and when uncertain, the prudent course is always to avoid unnecessary risks."

Messi's Inter Miami colleague Mateo Silvetti could not provide any clarity regarding his countryman's condition.

"I'm as uninformed as everyone else," Silvetti commented. "During that time, our focus was solely on the game. I wasn't sure if it was an injury or mere exhaustion. We're praying it's nothing major. Considering his attitude and all factors, we're sending him our best wishes."

Since his arrival at Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has had his playing time meticulously managed, with the team often resting him during busy schedules.

In recent years, he has been sidelined several times due to hamstring issues, which led to him missing portions of Miami's pre season earlier this year.

A serious injury to the eight time Ballon D'Or recipient, however, would severely impact Argentina's chances of retaining their World Cup title in the upcoming tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The competition begins in Mexico City on June 11th, with Argentina scheduled to face Algeria in Kansas City for their first match five days later.

Inter Miami's Sunday fixture marked their last before the MLS pauses for the World Cup.

Messi has not officially announced his participation in the World Cup, but it is anticipated he will feature, equalling the record for most finals appearances with six.

Argentina's team announcement is expected next week, with the squad travelling to the United States soon after for warm up matches against Honduras in Texas on June 6th and Iceland on June 9th.
