Memphis faces extended absence following Corinthians medical blunder
As reported by ge.globo, Memphis was approaching the end of his rehabilitation schedule when directed to undertake a power training session unsuitable for his current recovery phase.
In the midst of that workout, Memphis experienced discomfort in the front of his right thigh once more, worsening the grade 2 hamstring problem he first suffered. This error should push back the Dutch forward's on-field return by a minimum of two weeks.
The incident has sparked significant tension between the forward and the club's training team. On Saturday, Memphis shared his annoyance on social platforms, stating that his non-participation in the derby versus Palmeiras stemmed from "a few mistakes".
The forward's first injury happened on 22 March during a Brasileirão fixture against Flamengo.
In the recent international window, the athlete received thorough care in Europe upon selection for the Netherlands' warm-up games versus Norway and Ecuador. Memphis received therapy overseen by the Dutch squad and independent experts, applying techniques distinct from those at Corinthians.
The outcomes proved highly encouraging, with the forward landing in Brazil on 4 April almost fully recovered. His intentions involved featuring briefly in Sunday's derby against Palmeiras. However, this recent hindrance has nullified the medical team's four-week recovery projection. Memphis will definitely sit out this week's Libertadores encounter with Santa Fe.
Having dealt with conditioning challenges at Euro 2024, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman indicated he would include Memphis Depay in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup solely under specific terms: "He needs to be in top shape. If you want to shine and add value to the team, you have to be 100 per cent fit."
