Managers reflect on the A League semifinal outcomes
Adelaide United 0-3 Auckland FC
Airton Andrioli (Adelaide United):
"There is a mix of emotions here with pride for our achievements over the season mixed with sorrow at falling short when it mattered most. We hold our heads high after what has been a strong campaign overall.
"Auckland FC executed their plan effectively today with timely goals while we missed our opportunities so well done to them.
"The early substitution of Anselmo was unexpected and not something we wanted especially after conceding from a poorly defended corner just before half time. We rallied in the latter period but then there was a penalty decision I did not get a good view of. I have no intention of criticising officials tonight.
"Facing a side like Auckland that sits deep and packs the defence forced us to take risks.
"Referee Daniel Elder being from Adelaide raises a question about appointments for such matches. I am not claiming any poor performance from him but it places him in an awkward spot. Those making the selection should review this approach. In other nations referees from the local area are not given games like this for clear reasons."
Steve Corica (Auckland FC):
"We are delighted with the result. It was always going to be challenging here and many had dismissed our chances yet everyone rose to the occasion. In just two years we have claimed the premiership reached two semifinals and now we have our first shot at the biggest prize.
"Early on they held the advantage for the opening quarter until we settled into the contest after which we dominated proceedings. Our organisation in defence was strong and the players showed great fight limiting them to minimal openings.
"Team discussions during the week focused on the doubts others had expressed which spurred us on. We know our own capabilities and despite injuries we proved our squad strength with the impact from the bench.
"Effective work in both areas of the pitch fills me with pride. They are a quality side but we prevented them from playing their usual style forcing them into more long balls which suited our approach.
"Meeting my former club Sydney FC next will carry extra sentiment."
Newcastle Jets 1-1 Sydney FC
Mark Milligan (Newcastle Jets):
"This outcome is tough as we missed out on the decisive goal but I feel great pride in how the squad performed. We have challenged them significantly since the beginning and they have met those demands repeatedly. Tonight highlighted their strength of character. The year has brought progress and development with clear signs of further potential in many individuals.
"This experience should stay fresh in their minds as success requires learning from such setbacks.
"I will not claim we merited more since it is part of the game to earn what you want and we came up short this time.
"A big campaign lies ahead so it is vital this feeling lingers. We aim for lasting success with fans returning regularly which depends on our efforts both on and off the field. Much work remains and all are dedicated to making this level the standard."
Patrick Kisnorbo (Sydney FC):
"Emotions run high yet thoughts turn straight to next week as preparations must begin immediately. Tonight might have unfolded differently but I am pleased for the players. Conceding so late could unsettle any group but they showed resolve and composure under strain.
"The task is far from complete. I have expressed trust and confidence in the group. Joining midway can make it hard to gauge the situation but they have adjusted effectively. My high standards have been met well and I am pleased with the belief shown.
"Small adjustments were necessary at first to avoid major upheaval yet gradually the group found its rhythm. Mental strength has improved noticeably which counts greatly in this sport. Consistent effort in training has delivered results week after week.
"Our aim is stylish play combined with defensive solidity and both goals have been achieved."
