Lyon shock PSG with key victory to boost European aspirations and revive title contest

PSG entered the match following their advance to the UEFA Champions League semi finals, having skipped Ligue 1 action last week to focus on their midweek encounter with Liverpool.

Consequently, they appeared somewhat out of practice upon resuming league play, quickly trailing by two goals within the first 20 minutes.

Indeed, just under 10 minutes in, Endrick scored his fourth league goal since arriving on loan from Real Madrid in January, rifling the ball into the post from close range.

Abner Vinícius came close next, but Matvéi Safonov tipped his spectacular overhead kick over the crossbar, offering the home side only a brief respite before they fell further behind.

Lyon countered swiftly from a PSG corner via Afonso Moreira, who stayed composed to fire into the bottom corner.

The home team needed to fight back, and after Gonçalo Ramos looped a tame header straight to Dominik Greif, they earned a golden opportunity when Ainsley Maitland Niles fouled Lucas Hernández in the penalty area.

Yet, from the penalty, Ramos failed to outwit Greif, granting Lyon a major escape. As half time approached, Lucas Beraldo nodded over the bar, leaving PSG with a steep challenge ahead.

Post interval, Lyon kept pressing, with Moreira and Endrick drawing crucial stops from Safonov.

To inject more drive into his squad, Luis Enrique introduced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who although he challenged Greif and nodded wide soon after entering, could not spark the turnaround.

Ousmane Dembélé entered as a second half replacement too, coming nearest for his side when he bent a shot onto the woodwork with Greif beaten.

Kvaratskhelia reduced the deficit with a superb effort from distance that clipped the post on its way in, but in the end, Enrique’s choice to bench several key players proved costly as PSG could not overturn Lyon’s fast start.

This outcome leaves the defending champions only one point clear of RC Lens, and although they hold a match to reschedule, their pending clash with the main rivals may determine the championship destination.

For Lyon, ending a six match drought without a win had jeopardised their Champions League dreams, but two straight triumphs have lifted them to third, regaining control of their destiny.
