Jurrien Timber to miss World Cup after failing to recover from groin injury
Jurrien Timber sustained a groin injury in March and has spent a considerable period out of action since. The Arsenal defender played in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, but will not take part in the FIFA World Cup, as announced by the KNVB on Monday.
"The 24-year-old defender has not sufficiently recovered from a groin problem to be medically cleared for the World Cup," the football association said in a statement shared on social media.
"In consultation with the medical team, it has therefore been decided that Timber will depart the national team’s pre-camp in New York following the match against Uzbekistan."
Geertruida called up
Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was on the standby list chosen by manager Ronald Koeman, has been brought into the 26-man squad to replace Timber.
Geertruida, a 21-time Netherlands international, also featured in the Netherlands' friendly against Algeria on Wednesday, June 3rd, despite not being named in the original 26-man squad.
Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen remains as the final player on standby.
