Ipswich secure Premier League return, Hull beat Wrexham to last play-off spot
Ipswich are back in the Premier League at the first time of asking after dropping down last season. The Tractor Boys will join the league champions Coventry in gaining direct promotion.
Kieran McKennas team were largely positioned below the top two for most of the campaign, following Middlesbrough, yet a dismal spell for Boro sparked a contest between four clubs for the other automatic promotion position.
Millwall and Southampton also had realistic hopes of securing it, yet Ipswichs midweek stalemate with the latter combined with their victory against QPR proved sufficient.
Millwall, Middlesbrough, Southampton, who also came down from the Premier League last term, and Hull will now battle in the play-offs.
Hull began the decisive final matchday sitting in eighth place, yet they advanced to sixth via a 2-1 success against Norwich, alongside Derbys loss to Sheffield United and Wrexhams level result versus Boro.
This outcome halts Wrexhams streak of three successive promotions since being taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Hull will take on Millwall whereas Middlesbrough face Southampton across two legs in the semi-finals, before the victors clash at Wembley on May 23rd.
