Martinez keeps future plans under wraps as he targets World Cup victory for Portugal

When questioned about his plans after the tournament, the 52-year-old Martinez confirmed that his contract ends after the World Cup, but stressed that he is "concentrating on completing the project we began three and a half years ago".

"That is nothing new. We have discussed it a great deal in Portugal," Martinez said. "The most important thing is to focus on winning the World Cup."

Martinez will have to do without centre-back Ruben Dias for the match against Congo, as the defender did not recover in time from an injury picked up during Portugal's friendly with Nigeria.

"From a medical standpoint, we need him to be at full fitness for a World Cup match, and that is the approach we will take. It is about avoiding unnecessary risks at this point in the competition," Martinez stated.

However, he will have Cristiano Ronaldo available, who is playing in a sixth World Cup, although Martinez remarked that it seems like the Portugal striker's first tournament such is his enthusiasm.

"He sets an example. He is an iconic figure in world football for all athletes, both male and female, who adore the game. It is his sixth World Cup, yet it seems like his debut given the passion he brings to his training.

"He is vital, a forward who can create space for his teammates."

Martinez anticipates a difficult match against Congo, a side that is strong physically and rapid in counter-attacks. He warned that underestimating the African team would be a mistake.

"We must match Congo's emotional intensity. Winning by a single goal is merely acceptable, a draw would be a disaster, and losing would be catastrophic.

"Cape Verde demonstrated that there are no straightforward matches in this World Cup," he added after the newcomers held European champions Spain to a goalless draw in their opening fixture on Monday.

Captain Bruno Fernandes stated that Portugal would play with former teammate Diogo Jota in their minds. The forward died in a car crash last year and would almost certainly have been a key member of the squad at this World Cup.

"Everyone has mentioned him," Fernandes said. "He was a wonderful teammate, very humble, and deeply passionate about what he could achieve for our nation and for football in general.

"To us, he remains part of our team."
