'I can play three 90-minute matches a week', insists James ahead of England's World Cup campaign

James has established himself as one of the Three Lions' finest right-backs in recent years, with only injuries preventing him from arguably being considered among the world's elite.

The 26-year-old rarely finishes a campaign fully fit, but the 2025/26 season marked the first time in four years that Chelsea's standout defender made more than 30 appearances for his club.

The Englishman featured 29 times in the Premier League and registered seven goal involvements, while missing only six league matches due to injury.

For the first time in years, James finds himself in an excellent physical condition, and ahead of England's tournament opener against Croatia on 17th June, the Blues star believes he could manage three 90-minute games in a single week.

“I can play three 90-minute matches a week. I returned at the end of last season, played in the final few games, and I’m feeling good,” James said.

“I think timing is everything; as you noted, I’ve missed a number of major tournaments. I’ve tried to be ready and as well prepared as possible for this one, and I’ll give my all for my country.”

Chelsea's number 24 was also quick to compliment England manager Thomas Tuchel, describing the “brilliant” period he had with the German during his short tenure at Stamford Bridge.

“I had a brilliant time with the manager at Chelsea, and I’m delighted he’s the boss. I’m glad to work with him. For sure, that’s why we’re here. We don’t come just to participate, and as I speak, we’re on the mountain, still climbing. There’s still room to go, without a doubt.

“It’s great that the fans are in high spirits, but the tournament hasn’t started yet, so we’ve got a long way to go.”
