Guillermo Hoyos, Long-Standing Ally of Lionel Messi, Named as Inter Miami's Latest Manager
Hoyos, who served earlier as Miamis sporting director, steps in for Javier Mascherano, leaving the team for personal matters on Tuesday, merely four months following their inaugural MLS Cup victory.
The 62 year old Hoyos acted as an important early guide for Messi in Barcelonas youth setup over two decades past, and the two Argentines have kept their bond strong ever since.
"Friendship stands above all else. Our connection goes back many years," Hoyos remarked in Spanish during his initial media briefing.
"Yet that bond does not imply we will linger around him or intrude daily."
An official announcement from the club noted that Hoyos would lead the side for forthcoming fixtures, although recent social media updates from the team describe him as the primary manager.
Insiders at the club informed AFP that Hoyos anticipates holding the position just through mid year, paving the way for fresh leadership ahead of the Leagues Cup kick off in August.
With seven matches played this term, Inter Miami hold third spot in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.
Messi, victor of the 2022 World Cup and recipient of eight Ballon dOr awards, remains the standout star of Miamis lineup.
