Freiburg announce Ghana star Daniel-Kofi Kyereh's summer exit
SC Freiburg have revealed that midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh will leave the club when his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.
Having chosen not to activate the extension clause in the 30 year old's deal, the Bundesliga side confirmed Kyereh's imminent departure during an emotional farewell event attended by more than eight thousand supporters.
The Ghana international expressed gratitude towards his teammates and the club, stating, "I'll always cherish my time here. The squad stood by me throughout, and the warmth shown by the U23 players recently truly moved me."
Originally joining from FC St. Pauli for four point five million euros in 2022, Kyereh had previously impressed with thirteen goals and eleven assists during his final season with the Hamburg based club.
Of Ghanaian heritage but born in Germany's Cologne, the attacking midfielder quickly established himself as one of the nation's most promising creative talents following his transfer.
His performances earned international recognition, culminating in World Cup participation with Ghana in Qatar 2022. His eighteenth and final cap came during December's group stage encounter against Uruguay.
Career altering setback
A devastating training ground injury in February 2023 saw Kyereh rupture his anterior cruciate ligament, marking the second such serious knee injury of his professional career after first suffering similar damage aged nineteen.
Extended rehabilitation in Barcelona followed, with medical staff describing his recovery as fluctuating between steady progress and frustrating complications. The setback ruled him out of continental competition and European football with Freiburg.
Although returning to training in mid 2024, further issues emerged during preseason preparations, necessitating additional surgical intervention and effectively resetting his rehabilitation process entirely.
In total, Kyereh spent approximately nine hundred seventy five days sidelined through injury, representing one of the most prolonged absences in recent memory for a Ghanaian footballer.
Road to recovery
Marking a significant milestone, Kyereh recently made his competitive return with Freiburg's reserve side. Coach Julian Schuster noted the player's gradual reintroduction following extensive training with the squad.
Across seven appearances for the U23s, the midfielder has contributed two goals and created two more, including standout performances against Mainz 05's second string.
Despite his lengthy absence, international ambitions remain intact, with Kyereh targeting involvement in the 2026 World Cup. His recent displays are anticipated to generate transfer interest as he seeks to reestablish himself at senior level.
Once labelled by former manager Christian Streich as "football's joyful artist", Kyereh now awaits the next chapter in a career interrupted but not defined by adversity.
