Former Newcastle and England boss Keegan reveals stage four cancer diagnosis

It was disclosed back in January that the former Magpies, Manchester City and England manager was receiving cancer treatment, but the seriousness of his condition was not clear. 

The Daily Mail reports that the news left the 75-year-old confined to bed and his family devastated as he prepares for the worst. 

Yesterday’s appearance at the Tyne Theatre marked Keegan’s first public appearance since confirming his diagnosis, as he spoke about the treatment and how he is eager to say goodbye to fans at St. James’ Park. 

"They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer. He was a Liverpool supporter so I went to meet him. I knew I wouldn’t be walking alone, if you know what I mean."

He also spoke of the doctor who would be treating him, who had informed him of his impressive success rate against the disease.

"I said, 'Fantastic! What is your success rate?' He said, '33 per cent'. Oh. I thought he might say 80, maybe 90! Anyway, I am still here at the moment… 

"I want to say goodbye. I didn’t get the chance when I left the club last time," he told the crowd."

After quitting as Newcastle manager in 2008, Keegan vowed never to return to St James’ Park while Mike Ashley remained the owner of the club.

Ashley has since left and Keegan will be keen to say what will be an incredibly emotional farewell to Newcastle supporters, most likely when the new season begins.
