Former Ghana coach Otto Addo named in FIFA Technical Study Group for 2026 World Cup

Otto Addo has secured a significant position at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, not as a manager on the touchline, but in a vital analytical capacity within football.

FIFA has announced that the ex-Ghana national team coach will join the Technical Study Group for the 2026 event, forming part of an elite assembly of football experts dedicated to reviewing the competition.

Addo is among an impressive lineup for the 2026 TSG, featuring Swiss goalkeeper icon Pascal Zuberbuhler, Northern Ireland head coach and tactical expert Michael O'Neill, and ex-Argentina and Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta.

The panel also includes Brazilian World Cup victor and midfield maestro Gilberto Silva, alongside former Denmark forward and present coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, plus Costa Rican star Paulo Wanchope.

US football star Tobin Heath, ex-Borussia Dortmund and Netherlands midfielder Aron Winter, previous Germany and USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann, and Welsh football veteran Jayne Ludlow, once at the helm of Arsenal Ladies, complete the group.

Yet, after two losses in the March break, the Ghana Football Association chose to end Addo's tenure. Carlos Queiroz then stepped in as the new coach for Ghana before the tournament.

Instead of observing from afar, Addo now holds a prime spot for in-depth examination in international football.

He will scrutinise all games at the event, evaluating strategies, formations, set plays, shifts, pressing approaches, and growing performance metrics. A major duty involves spotting major patterns that will influence worldwide football moving forward.

The TSG produces comprehensive FIFA Technical Reports, shared globally as tools for coaches and utilised by associations, trainers, and youth setups on all continents.

Addo will contribute to selecting top individual awards like the Golden Ball for outstanding player, Golden Boot for leading goalscorer, Golden Glove for top goalkeeper, and Best Young Player accolade.

Over the period from June 11 to July 19, he will view fixtures including those of his old team in Group L, providing insights on patterns and setups for the whole competition, not just one squad's progress.
