Football Australia rejects Western United's A-League return

The 2022 champions were expelled from the Australian top flight last year due to financial difficulties and a player registration ban imposed by FIFA.

The ownership group prevented liquidation by obtaining funds to settle a tax debt by January however other creditors are pursuing them for unpaid obligations as reported by Australian media last month.

Football Australia stated on Tuesday that its First Instance Board had granted licences to the 12 existing A-League clubs for the 2026/27 season but not to Western United.

"The FIB confirmed that all current A-League teams with the exception of Western United FC have fulfilled the required criteria in the Regulations for A-Leagues club licensing," FA said in a statement.

Western United has until Friday to appeal.

The club indicated they are reviewing the ruling and appeal possibilities but did not specify if they intend to challenge it.

"We can assure the community that work continues behind the scenes to stabilise the club and secure a long-term sustainable future for football in Melbourne's west," they said in a statement.
