Finland Scores Four Goals Against Slovakia to Gain Momentum in Women's World Cup Qualifiers
Finland challenged Portugal closely in their initial match back in March, only yielding two goals towards the end, and then secured the necessary points on home turf by defeating Latvia, which positioned them second in the group, ahead of Slovakia due to a superior goal difference.
Securing three points that afternoon would sustain their hopes of leading the group, and Finland began ideally when Katariina Kosola managed to tame a long ball from Joanna Tynnila, keeping her composure one on one with the keeper to give her team the lead just four minutes in.
A significant milestone occurred around the middle of the first half, stemming from a smooth team play that saw Lotta Lindstrom link up effectively on the edge of the box before feeding Adelina Engman, who rounded off the move with flair on her 100th appearance for the national side.
Yet the match intensified with ten minutes remaining in the first period, following Martina Surnovska's precise pass to Klaudia Fabova, who slipped past the onrushing Anna Koivunen to pull one back for Slovakia.
The second half's outcome was largely decided during a crucial eight-minute window.
Helmarit extended their advantage near the halfway mark of the period by regaining the ball as Slovakia pushed upfield and counterattacking swiftly. Engman collected a precise delivery while surging along the left flank, and her delivery was nodded in forcefully by Paulina Nystrom for her debut international strike.
Still, the hosts found themselves level soon after the interval, when Dominika Skorvankova was felled inside the box by Oona Siren, allowing Patricia Hmirova to convert from twelve yards.
Finland sealed the result with fifteen minutes left, courtesy of the alternate Nystrom. Skipper Eva Nystrom climbed above the crowd from a corner, and after her initial effort was repelled, she reacted to the loose ball and guided it into the net.
The 4-2 triumph elevates Finland to six points, yet they remain behind Portugal in terms of goal difference. The Portuguese could reclaim their three-point cushion when they face Latvia later tonight, whereas the Finnish squad's following fixture is an away clash with Latvia on Saturday 18th.
