It is unfortunate news for the European champions, Spain. Fermin Lopez stands as a vital player for the national team after a remarkable campaign with Barcelona where they claimed LaLiga. He will now miss the event in North America.

The Huelva born player was replaced during the half time interval in Sundays match against Betis after suffering an impact to his foot.

Barcelona issued an official medical statement on Monday indicating he has sustained a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. Sadly this rules him out of the World Cup since surgery is required and recovery is projected at six to eight weeks.

De la Fuente is set to reveal the final squad of 26 players for Spain next Monday May 25th.
