FC Den Bosch secure play-off place despite defeat to ADO Den Haag

Despite a 3-1 defeat against Keuken Kampioen Divisie winners ADO Den Haag, FC Den Bosch clinched the sixth and last play-off position in the Dutch second division, thanks to victories for Cambuur over Vitesse and for Willem II against FC Dordrecht.

Supporters of FC Den Bosch erupted in joy following the loss to ADO Den Haag, which came after Sekou Sylla netted the first goal in the 25th minute, as they chanted "We are going up!" together.

Before the concluding regular-season matches on Friday in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, it suited FC Den Bosch to lose against ADO Den Haag, since an ADO victory would probably prevent Vitesse from securing a play-off berth through the period rankings.

Benefiting from the intricate promotion play-off regulations, FC Den Bosch required two teams among ADO Den Haag, Willem II, and Almere City FC to place higher than Vitesse in the fourth-period table, with each of those sides already assured of promotion or a play-off entry.

Vitesse was pursuing ADO Den Haag and Willem II during the fourth period and required a position in the top two to snatch the remaining spot, thereby sidelining FC Den Bosch, who had locked in ninth place in the overall league table.

Securing ninth in the regular season has now granted FC Den Bosch a play-off place, positioning them as the sixth team from the second tier in the battle for Eredivisie promotion, alongside Willem II, De Graafschap, Almere City FC, RKC Waalwijk, and Roda JC.

The Eredivisie side in 16th position, presently Excelsior, will also compete in the play-offs, taking on one of the six second-division clubs in a two-match showdown on Wednesday, May 20th, and Saturday, May 23rd.
